Life begins at the end of your comfort zone

It was almost 10 years ago at a time that I had delivered a talk with Education Leaders in one of the countries in the middle east (Jordan at that time) about the future transformation of our world beginning with the classroom, and how students' behavior is shifting as Life is Shifting at the same time, and what was once a norm in the teacher's time became a "weird" in today's students time; I started my keynote speech with a Question: "Ladies & Gentlemen, are we sitting here today, because that's exactly where we thought we would be 20 years ago?" an awkward silence followed in the big hall filled with representatives of all Universities of one of the leading countries in education at that time.

I smiled and played the below video... (9 Minutes)

That Silence started emerging into so many other reactions, but the one I was looking for, was acknowledgment that we need to Change... TODAY.

The reason why I'm writing this post, is because not so long ago, I was asked for a career advice, and I started the conversation by asking: "What do you REALLY want?" and the person was saying "It's not what I want, it's what is available in the market... "

You see, it's very common to follow the crowd, and to think about your life as an inevitable consequence of the trials and errors of generations before you and that your future will be relying on what other think is COMMON. Well it shouldn't be.

Where Were You?

When I was in College, I had a debate (a nice way of calling it than a fight) with a highly ranked professor, while I was trying to explain to her that I wanted my senior year project to be related to Mobile internet. I lost that Debate, and needed to do a more COMMON type of projects (Stock Management and Accounting as very common then);  But I was more stubborn that I thought, and didn't lose faith in my vision of myself, and did 2 Senior year projects at the same time, with my colleague and did a patent  and presented the other  project to Ericsson and won first Place in a big competition as being the Best Mobile Internet Business Model of 2002, it was about mobile payment using SMS.

Sometimes life is going to hit you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith.

- Steve Jobs

Fast forwarding to today,

Most of the greatest leaders of our times, were pushing themselves beyond what was COMMON, and what was outside of their comfort zone, it's terrifying most of the times, but it's very rewarding.

So my Advice to that person, was and still is... Follow your Dream, and Push yourself beyond your comfort zone... and You will be happy that You Succeeded on your own.

Cheers,
SC
